Description

Dryopteris marginalis (marginal wood fern) is a perennial species of fern found in damp shady areas.

This is a woodland fern which is most often found in shaded crevices of rocky ledges and bluffs. Features grayish-green, deeply cut, leathery fronds. Dryopteris marginalis has leathery leaves or fronds of deep blue-green. Prefers shade and moist soil containing large amounts of organic matter. Can take dry-ish shade.

Planting and care

  • Gather the spores from the mature fronds.
  • Remove the frond from the plant and place it in a paper bag with the spore side down.
  • Dry the frond for up to two weeks in a warm, dry location.
  • Sterilize a large salt shaker by rinsing it in a bleach solution of one part bleach to nine parts water. Allow drying completely.
  • Remove the frond from the paper bag, tapping it lightly to shake off any remaining spores.
  • Pour the spores, dust and dried bits of frond into the sterilized salt shaker.

    How to plant fern bulbs?

    3. Fill the remaining pot with same soil.
    4. Keep the plant in indirect bright light location for 2-3 days.

    1. Keep the plant in indirect bright light for 3-4 days and gradually move to a location receiving indirect bright light.
    2. Dig a pit twice the size of the bag/pot the current plant is in.
    3. Fill the 1/3 of pit with soil rich in organic content, place the plant in center and fill the pit with same soil.
    4. Apply water. General caring tips- Plant should get indirect bright light. Water the plant when surface soil (1-2 inch) feels dry to touch. Apply any organic fertilizer during the main growing season (June July).
