Description for Peace Lily, Spathiphyllum (Small)

Plant height: 9 - 15 inches (22 - 39 cm)
Plant spread:

Peace Lily, is a very popular indoor houseplant. It is a clump-growing herbaceous perennial which produces white flowers which look like the hood of a cobra. Leaves are shiny and glossy, attractive even with no spathes.
Peace lilies are sturdy plants with glossy, dark green oval leaves that narrow to a point. The leaves rise directly from the soil. The long-lasting flowers start out pale green and slowly turn creamy white as they open.

Common name(s): Peace lily, Cobra plant
Flower colours: Creamy-White
Bloom time: Spring or early summer
Max reachable height: 1 to 6 feet
Difficulty to grow: Easy to grow

Planting and care

  • As the peace lily grows from year to year, it develops a rhizome, or horizontal stem growing just under the soil surface, that can be divided to propagate a new plant.
  • Remove the lily from the soil by lifting the rhizome out of the soil with a fork, gently. It should lie just beneath the surface of the soil directly beneath the plant.
  • Shake off and rinse away any excess soil.
  • Cut the rhizome into pieces with sharp, sanitized pruning shears or a sharp knife.
  • Each piece of the rhizome should have one bud or growth point on it.
  • Discard any rhizome portions that appear withered or diseased and only replant plump portions without any signs of damage or withering.
  • Fill one container per rhizome division, each similar in size to the original lily's container, with a high-quality potting soil mix.
  • Plant each rhizome division just below the soil surface, the dormant bud or growth point should barely show through the soil.
  • Moisten the soil thoroughly and discard any water that leaks out the bottom of the container.
  • Place the newly potted rhizomes in a warm location with plenty of indirect light, and keep the soil moist but not soggy until the new lily establishes roots.
  • Sunlight: Partial shade to full shade
    Soil: Well-drained soil
    Water: Moderately
    Temperature: 18 to 24 degrees C
    Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer

    Caring for Peace Lily

    • During the main growing season (April - August) feed with organic fertilizer once a month.
    • Keep the Peace lily away from direct sunlight as it can cause damage to the foliage.
    • Allow the soil to become dry at the top to the touch between watering and do not over water.
    • Peace lily should be repot once a year at the beginning of spring.
