What is the difference between open-pollinated and hybrid seeds?

Open-pollinated seeds are pollinated by insects or wind, and their offspring will be similar to the parent plant. This means that you can save seeds from open-pollinated plants and grow them again next year. Hybrid seeds are created by crossing two different parent plants, and their offspring will not be the same as the parent plants. Hybrid seeds are often bred for specific traits like disease resistance or yield, but you cannot save the seeds from hybrid plants and expect the same characteristics in the next generation.

How long do vegetable and herb seeds last?

The lifespan of vegetable and herb seeds depends on the type of seed and how they are stored. In general, seeds can last anywhere from 1-5 years if stored properly. Seeds should be kept in a cool, dry place and in airtight containers to prevent moisture and humidity from affecting the seeds. It is recommended to sow fresh seeds as they will have a higher germination rate, but you can still try to sow older seeds as well.

Can I grow vegetables and herbs indoors?

Yes, many vegetables and herbs can be grown indoors in containers or pots. Some of the most popular indoor plants include tomatoes, lettuce, basil, parsley, and mint. What is the difference between heirloom and hybrid vegetable seeds?

Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated seeds that have been passed down through generations of gardeners. They are often prized for their unique characteristics and flavors, and their genetic diversity. Heirloom seeds can be saved and replanted each year, and they are often the choice for gardeners who want to preserve the history and genetic diversity of plants. Hybrid seeds, on the other hand, are created by crossing two different parent plants and are bred for specific characteristics such as disease resistance or higher yield. They cannot be saved and replanted year after year and may be less genetically diverse.

How do I store my vegetable and herb seeds?

Seeds should be stored in a cool, dry place in airtight containers such as glass jars or plastic bags. Make sure to label the container with the type of seed and the date of storage. If possible, add a desiccant such as silica gel or dry rice to help absorb any moisture. Storing seeds in the refrigerator or freezer can also extend their lifespan.

Can I save seeds from my vegetable and herb plants?

Yes, if you are using open-pollinated or heirloom seeds, you can save the seeds from your plants and replant them next year. However, if you are using hybrid seeds, the seeds may not produce the same characteristics as the parent plant, and it may not be worth saving them. It's important to properly harvest and store seeds to ensure their viability for the next growing season.

Thieves who fail to respond to emails

I ordered my lucky bamboo. They claim it had been delivered but it was not delivered. I suspect the pathetic company they used, which was a local company got the address wrong and delivered to a similar street. Despite trying to chase this up they fail to respond to my messages. One person told me it was on the way but that was only the second part of the order. I have sent three emails that have gone responded all in the meantime this company steals from me and refuses to get invovled.
