Amaryllis is a perennial flowering plant.Amaryllis is a monotypic (consisting of only one species) genus of flowering plants containing the Belladonna Lily, popularly known as the Amaryllis belladonna lily. Amaryllis is a native of South and Central America and the Caribbean.

The Hippeastrum genus of flowering bulbed plants is erroneously named as the Amaryllis or Christmas Amaryllis.

Planting and care

  • If leaves turn yellow, cut them off at the base.
  • Rotate the pot frequently to prevent the flower stalks from leaning toward the light.
  • The flower stalks may require support to keep from toppling.
  • Flowering is initiated by a stress period of cool or dry conditions.
  • The stress period must be at least 10 weeks to be effective.
  • These conditions can be provided by keeping the bulbs dry during winter.
  • Re-pot the bulb into fresh mixture from early to late Spring and follow the above growing instructions.
  • Amaryllis Lily Double care

    Plant the bulb with the neck at, or slightly above, ground level. In areas where some frost may occur, the bulb should be set with five or six inches of soil above it, followed by an application of four or five inches of fine mulch. Water the area thoroughly after planting.

    Sunlight Choose a site with full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily).
    Watering Once growth starts, water only if rain is infrequent and the top two inches of soil are dry.
    Soil Well-drained soil.

    Fertilizer After the leaves appear, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10); repeat once a month through April. From June through September.

    How to plant jersey lily bulbs?

    To plant Jersey lily bulbs consider the following points.
    1. To grow plant in pot, choose a pot having of 5-7 inch upper diameter and drainage holes.
    2. Fill the 1/3 pot with well drained soil which is rich in organic content and place the plant in the center of the pot.
    3. Fill the remaining pot with same soil.
    4. Keep the plant in indirect bright light location for 2-3 days and then gradually move to a location that receives 4-6 hours of direct bright sunlight.
    5. Once the plant is overgrown in current pot, plant it in field. If you are planting bulbs directly in ground follow below procedure.
    1. Select location receiving direct bright sunlight for 4-6 hours a day and soil should be nutrient rich and well drained.
    2. Dig a hole up to 2-3 inch and Set the bulb in the hole pointy side up or the roots down.
    3. After planting back fill with soil over the hole, lightly compress the soil but do not pack it and water gently.
    4. Apply water. General caring tips- Plant should get 4-6 hours of direct bright sunlight a day. Water the plant when surface soil (1-2 inch) feels dry to touch. Apply any organic fertilizer during the main growing season (June July).
