Allium, also called Ornamental Onion, is one of the most interesting blooms in the spring and summer garden. With a spherical shape flower that holds its form throughout the season, it is one of the long lasting blooms to be had from a bulb. Use Allium in repetition throughout the landscape to add a sense of cohesion to your beds.

Planting and care

  • Choose a location in full sun and be sure the soil is well-drained.
  • The one environment that Alliums do not tolerate is hot and wet.
  • Sowing season of Allium is in the rainy season.
  • It should be planted at 10 to 12 cm deep; maintaining 10 to 12 cm spacing between two bulbs.
  • This bulb requires loose and porous potting soil.
  • Water only when the soil feels dry to touch
  • Allium require very little maintenance.

  • Garden soil + Compost + Perlite + Sand (2:2:1:1)
  • Soil + Cocopeat + vermicompost (2:1:2)
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
    Soil: Sandy loam soil
    Water: Moderately
    Temperature: 20 to 30 degrees Celsius
    Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer.

    Caring for Allium sphaerocephalon

    • You should fertilize a plant mostly in the spring season, flower bud stage.
    • Water a plant when the soil feels dry to touch. If there is a dry spell and it does not rain, you must water the bulbs weekly until the ground freezes.
    • Apply compost annually to provide nutrients needed for future blooms.
