Description

Ocimum tenuiflorum, Ocimum sanctum, holy basil, or tulasi is an aromatic perennial plant in the family Lamiaceae which is native to the Indian subcontinent.

Ocimum tenuiflorum (synonym- Ocimum sanctum) is the scientific name of the Kapoor tulsi. Tulsi is a perennial, branched, fragrant, and erect herb having hair all over. Its leaves are nearly round and up to 5 cm long with the margin being entire or toothed.

Flowers are rarerly longer than 5 mm, calyx tube bearded outside near base. Flower tube is hairy. The fruits are small and the seeds yellow to reddish in color.

Planting and care

    It is found growing naturally in moist soil nearly all over the globe. Kapoor is the best Holy Basil for temperate gardens. Acts like an annual, and is even known to self-seed in a temperate climate, which is quite unusual for basil.
