Description

Hedeoma pulegiodies is a species of Hedeoma native to eastern North America. It is a low-growing, strongly aromatic herbaceous annual plant.

The stems are light green, terete, and pubescent. The opposite leaves are about 1 long; they are elliptic, oblong-lanceolate, or oblong-oblanceolate in shape. The margins of the leaves are smooth or they have a few blunt teeth toward their tips. The petioles of the leaves are short and slender.

The foliage of American Pennyroyal has a strong medicinal-mint scent. Small axillary clusters of 1-4 flowers are produced from the base of each middle to upper leaf.

Planting and care

Start with pruning shears for smaller growth. Use loppers, which look like giant, long-handle shears, for growth that is more than half an inch thick. A small pruning saw is handy, as it cuts on both the push and the pull.
