Description
This is best known Ayurvedic herb used for pacifying Pitta Dosha. Its roots are used for cooling action, to cool down brain & in treatment of brain ulcer.
It is a perennial grass grows up to 1 to 2 meter high with wide clumps. Clumps arise from the rhizome, it can grow up to 8 feet. Rhizomes are small do not run out. Leaf-sheaths compressed, especially the lower which are sharply keeled; blades narrowly linear, acute, 30-90 cm long, erect, rigid.
Panicle oblong, up to over 30 cm long, usually contracted; rachis stout smooth. Racemes up to 5 cm long, very slender. Sessile spikelets linear-lanceolate to almost linear, acute, 4.2-4.8 mm long. It is widely used in perfumes and cosmetics, and for scenting soaps. It blends well with the oils of sandalwood, patchouli and rose. A decoction of the leaves is recommended as a diaphoretic. When locally applied in rheumatism, lumbago, and sprain, it is a good embrocation and affords relief.Plant Specifications
