It is a climbing plant. The wild-type is also sometimes cultivated and is used as a traditional medicine. It can grow up to 30 to 50 meter long. Plant grow on canopy tree by supporting aerial roots. Leaves are pinnately lobed.

Elongated glands or nectaries visible on the underside of the leaf blade and resemble oil dots when viewed from above.Flowers near the base of spadix lack stamens. Seeds about 4 mm diam., immersed in the orange flesh. Testa cream. Embryo curved, about 3 mm long.
