Description

Pittosporum is widely used for its medicinal value. The plants from India used in snakebite treatment.

It is a small tree growing up to 8 meters tall. The trunk is brown, lenticellate. Young branches are pubescent, lenticellate. Leaves are simple, alternate, crowded at the apex. Petioles are long, minutely pubescent. The inflorescence is racemes. The flower is cream in color. 2 valved, globose, smooth, black capsule with 4 seeds.

Seeds are resinous sticky pulp, reddish-orange in color. The Stem & bark is antibacterial, antifungal.used in snake bites.e.Large shrubs, to 2 m tall; bark rough, grey outside, pungent smelling when cut, granular. Leaves pseudoverticillate towards the branch tips, 6-9 x 2-4 cm, elliptic, acute at either ends, 10-12-nerved; midrib tomentose above and below; petiole 1 cm long. Flowers in terminal sessile umbels, pedicels 5 mm long; sepals 2.5 x 1.5 mm, ovate, obtuse, pubescent; petals creamy-white, 12 x 3 mm, oblanceolate, clawed; filaments 6 mm long; ovary densely hairy; style 4 mm long, glabrous. Capsule 8 x8 mm, globose, smooth, black.
