Description
Evergreen tree with medicinal properties. It is used as a cooking spice. It is aphrodisiac, nourishing, cardiac tonic but it may cause indigestion.
Chironji Tree is a medium-sized deciduous tree, growing to about 50 ft tall. Plants identified by the dark grey crocodile bark with the red blaze. Leaves are tick & leathery. Leaves have straight, parallel veins. Greenish white flowers bloom in early spring.
It bears fruits each containing a single seed, which is popular as an edible nut, known as chironji. Fruits ripen from April to May and remain on the tree for quite a long time. Flowering season January -to March. The gum from the tree is used against leprosy in traditional medicine.The tree yields a gum copiously in large, irregular pieces.The roots are acrid, astringent, cooling, depurative and constipating.
