Herbology 101 – 5 enchanting plants from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
April 13, 20201. Devil’s Snare
This plant seems like an ordinary houseplant, but when touched, it tightens and constricts around the object and chokes the life out of them – it makes its first appearance appearance in Book 1, when the gang has to escape its clutches to continue their pursuit of the Philosopher’s stone. It is unique as it hates sunlight – unlike any other plant that we know of.
2. Mandrakes
This plant has roots that look like a small baby and emits a cry that can be fatal to humans. Appearances can be deceptive though, as this highly useful plant is the prime ingredient in the potion that brought back all the victims Petrified by the Basilisk.
3. Whomping Willow
Planted on the grounds of Hogswarts, the Whomping Willow disguised the secret passage from Hogwarts to the Shrieking Shack. This plant packs quite a punch, making two memorable appearances in Book 2 and Book 3, attacking Mr. Weasley’s Ford Anglia car and then Harry and Hermione as they try to follow Ron and Sirius Black into the Shrieking Shack.
4. Gillyweed
Everyone’s favorite house-elf, Dobby (book) or Neville (movie) procured Gillyweed to help Harry Potter in the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament – eating this slimy plant helped Harry grow gills and breathe underwater for an hour.
5. Venomous Tentacula
This dangerous plant is extremely useful for potion making, although Prof. Slughorn was most interested in the value of the Tentacula’s leaves in the grey market. Hogwarts students enjoyed the fact that they could swear loudly if a Tentacula tried to strangle them during class with its spiky vines.
