Description for Alpinia Purpurata, Pink Ginger

Plant height: 1.5 - 3 inches
Plant spread: 4 - 8 inches

Red ginger can grow tall up to 8 feet, and it has a spectacular flower spike. The small, inconspicuous, tubular, white flowers emerge from between colorful floral bracts on terminal flower spikes. Young plantlets emerge from the base of the old inflorescences and can take root if they touch the ground. The flowers are occasionally followed by rounded seed capsules.

Flower colours: White. The much more conspicuous floral bracts are Pink
Bloom time: blooms all year around after mature the plant.

Planting and care

It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates.

Soil: Rich, well-drained soil
Water: Make sure its soil constantly moist. Do not let the potting soil dry out.
Temperature: Above 41 degrees F
Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly with a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer.

Caring for Alpinia Purpurata

  • If you live in a colder area, bring your red ginger into an indoor garden during the winter.
  • Do not let red ginger experience temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for long periods of time.
  • Prune it often.
