Description for Kids easy gardening, Dianthus

In seeds balls, all you have to do is through them at a patch of dirt/ land or place in a pot. It has everything required to grow once it rains (Or you can water them) The species are mostly herbaceous perennials, a few are annual or biennial, and some are low subshrubs with woody basal stems. The leaves are opposite, simple, mostly linear and often strongly glaucous grey to green and blue to green. The flowers have five petals, typically with a frilled or pinked margin, and are pale to dark pink.

Planting and care

Dianthus can be propagated from seeds, directly sown into the garden, or grown from stem cuttings. To plant from seed, begin 2-8 weeks prior to the last frost for your area. Plant in a light, loamy soil mix, sprinkling seeds over the top, and then covering with a light layer of soil. Plant seeds to a depth of 1/8 inch once all danger of frost has passed. Keep the soil moist, and once they have 2-3 leaves, thin to 8-12 inches apart. To start from stem cuttings, cut away several non-flowering stems from the parent plant just below a leaf joint.

Caring for Kids easy gardening

  • Plant them in full sun or partial shade or anywhere they will receive at least 6 hours of sun.
