The genus Scrophularia of the family Scrophulariaceae comprises about 200 species of herbaceous flowering plants commonly known as figworts.
It is hardy to zone (UK) 7 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Jun to September, and the seeds ripen from Jul to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, wasps.Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.
Special features: The leaves have toothed, triangular or lance-shaped blades up to 13 centimeters long which are borne on stalks measuring up to 10 centimeters in length.
