Description for Loropetalum, Chinese Fringe Bush

Plant height: 1.0 - 1.7 inches

Loropetalum chinense is commonly known as the Chinese fringe flower. Loropetalum chinense are evergreen with branches forming horizontal layers. The leaves are alternately arranged, ovate up to 5 cm long by 3.5 cm wide, and have a slightly abrasive feel.

The leaves are oval and glossy green, set on stems with crinkly brown bark. Blooms appear in March to June and last for up to two weeks on the stems. A pink-flowering variety with leaves varying from bronze-red when new to olive-green or burgundy when mature, depending on selection and growing conditions.

Planting and care

Loropetalum plants are native to Japan, China and the Himalayas. The plants may be as tall as 10 feet but are usually small trees of 5 feet. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun. L. chinense grows best in fertile, slightly acidic soil in full sun for deepest foliage color.

Caring for Loropetalum

  • The plants may be pruned to keep them in a smaller size.
