Description for Achillea millefolium, Yarrow
Plant height: 0.5 - 1.0 inches
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow /ˈjæroʊ/ or common yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Common name(s): Sneezewort
Flower colours: cream or pink
Bloom time: June to September
Max reachable height: 2.00 to 3.00 feet
Difficulty to grow: easy to grow
Planting and care
Plant in the spring in well-drained, average to poor soil. Yarrows thrive in hot, dry conditions; they will not tolerate wet soil. If you grow yarrows in rich soil, the plants may require stalking because the rich soil encourages growth.
Sunlight: Full sun
Soil: well-drained soil
Caring for Achillea millefolium
Divide yarrow plants every 3 to 5 years. Lift the clumps of flowers in early spring or fall and remove any dead stems from the center of the clump. You can replant the divisions in well-prepared soil.
Typical uses of Achillea millefolium
Special features: Cottage gardens, wild gardens, meadows, prairies and naturalized areas. Good fresh cut or dried flower.
Culinary use: This species is generally considered to be too weedy for borders. Can be used as a flowering ground cover or lawn for sunny out-of-the-way areas (mow as needed with rotary mower on high setting).
Ornamental use: The plant is used for ornamental purpose.
