Like other succulents, cat tails euphorbia is extremely drought tolerant and requires a very well draining, rocky or sandy soil. The plant is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 10 according to Michigan State University, though San Marcos Growers claims that plant is hardy to at least 25 degrees Fahrenheit, which includes USDA zone 9. Cat tails euphorbia will tolerate light shade, though it will be more compact and manageable in full sun.

Cat tails euphorbia is considered a "coraliform" or "coraliformes" euphorbia type due to its skinny, coral-like stems, and may also be referred to as stick plant or stick cactus according to San Marcos Growers.
