Description for Raphis Palm, Lady Palm

Although most fan palms are house plants and will mostly be found in large interior scape because of their size and spread, the Rhapis Palm is well suited to life in the home. It has more of an upright growth habit than many other fan palms.

Rhapis are some of the easiest palms to grow, but each species has its own particular environment and culture requirements. Both 6 and 8 inch pots can be used as table top and accent plants, while 10 inch and up are free standing specimens.

Find a plant that fits an area indoors and you won’t have to worry about the Rhapis outgrowing its space and it can work as a natural air cleaner. Wherever you may live, Rhapis is one plant that will thrive in your house or landscape.

Planting and care

Lady Palm, is a great indoor house plant. The fan-like fronds are a shiny, glossy green when healthy. Lady Palms will tolerate lower light than many other palms, making it a good choice for indoor or office.
Rhapis as a slow growing palm. A typical 6 – 8 inch potted plant has been growing in the nursery for minimum of 2 years.

You will find two styles of Lady Palms in nurseries and garden centres: One is “butterball”.
These plants, grown from seed, have lots of canes and a 3 – 4 foot plant can be 3 – 3-1/2 wide. Full of leaves top to bottom and you usually find these in pot sizes from 6 up to 14 Inch.
The other style is a more upright and open plant. These plants have been dug from the field, are thinner in appearance but have more height.

Sunlight Soil Water Temperature Fertilizer
Dappled light is best during the summer. In winter, it can tolerate light shade. Rhapis will grow in almost any well-drained soil, but prefer a soil mixture. Soil density should be firm and allow water to slowly filter through. All roots and the base of canes should be covered to retain moisture. Use pebbles or sand to increase drainage. Water liberally during the summer, ensuring perfect drainage. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or every other week, depending on the temperature. Plant works best between -5°C to 38°C. For fertilizer dosage, leaf colour is one of your best guides:
Rich green indicates fertilizer levels are adequate.
Slight overall yellowish colour may mean the to apply nutrients.

Caring for Raphis Palm

  • Remove lower leaves as they yellow and trim brown tips to the natural leaf shape using clean, sharp scissors.
  • Reducing the light intensity will cause it to eventually drop some inner and lower fronds. Keep these removed as they occur.
  • Keep your palm s foliage clean and initially keep an eye out for insect problems.
  • Mealy bug, thrips, scale and sometimes even aphids can be a problem but a good wash down with soapy water should control these pests.

Typical uses of Raphis Palm
