Magnolia champaca, known in English as champak, is a large evergreen tree in the Magnoliaceae family. It was previously classified as Michelia champaca. It known for its fragrant flowers, and its timber used in woodworking.

Planting and care

Harvest seeds from the ripened fruit of an existing Michelia champaca tree.Thoroughly wash the seeds.Lightly rub the surface of each seed with sandpaper.Remove the seeds from the water and treat them with a plant fungicide.Place one 4-inch pot on a tray for each seed.

Soil: Well-drained soil
Water: Water slowly and deeply
Temperature: 35 to 40 degrees C
Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer, White champaca is a moderately heavy feeder and requires consistent levels of nutrients during the active growing season. The type of fertilizer and application frequency depends on the age of the tree and its growing conditions.

Caring for Michelia Champa

  • Prune trees to remove wayward, broken, dead, or diseased branches and limbs, or for safety around utility lines.
  • Use pruning saws and oderate work, and a chainsaw for heavy work.
  • As always take all safety precautions when using power equipment, or when you have to get off the ground for pruning.

Typical uses of Michelia Champa

Special features: Tropical specimen for frost free areas. Effective near decks and patios or the front porch. For areas South of USDA Zone 10, it must be grown in containers which are overwintered indoors. Widely grown in greenhouses.

Ornamental use: The plant is used for ornamental purpose.
