Portulaca is the type genus of the flowering plant of family Portulacaceae, comprising about 40-100 species found in the tropics and warm temperate regions. The flowers are formed at the tips of the stems. They are rose-like in appearance and have either single, semi-double or double petals.

Members of the Portulaca genus are relatively easy to grow hardy or half hardy annuals that reach from 6 to 18 inches (15 to 45 cm) in height. They carry succulent leaves and bloom from summer to the second half of autumn and carry cup shaped flowers. In some parts of the world Portulaca is aptly named the “Time flower” because the flower opens and closes at specific times of the day.

Portulaca is especially well-suited for growing in containers on patios and decks, with its fleshy, succulent leaves, red stems, and colorful cactus-like flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, purple and white. Plants prefer hot, dry, almost desert-like conditions. Portulaca also uses in a rockery, between stepping stones as ground cover or in a hanging basket.
