Description

These hardy small trees branch out wide with very attractive leaves.

Calliandra is a large genus of tropical plants that consists of about 200 species of small trees and evergreen, flowering shrubs. Calliandra haematocephala, commonly known as the Powder Puff Tree, is native to South America.

Powder Puffs grow up to 10 feet tall with an equal spread, but dwarf, 3-6 foot varieties are also available.

Planting and care

  • Powder Puff plants can also be propagated with stem tip cuttings taken during the spring months.
  • Dust each cut with a rooting hormone and strike into a peat moss/perlite mix at 75 degree F until the cuttings are well rooted.

    • Powder Puff Plant care

    Calliandras grow and flower best if they are grown in full sun, but they tolerate some partial shade, especially in hot summer regions. They should be planted in reasonably fertile, moist but well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5.Powder Puff plants should be watered regularly and thoroughly to maintain evenly moist soil, especially during the summer growing season.

    How to grow powder puff plant?

    Powder puff plant is grown by seed and cuttings. Consider the following points to grow plant.
    1. Sunlight- More than 6 hours of direct bright sunlight is required.
    2. Soil- Soil should be well drained, fertile and nutrient rich.
    3. Water- Water the plant when 1-2 inch surface soil layer feels dry to touch.

    How to propagate powder puff plants?

    Powder puff plant is propagated by seed and cuttings.
    1. To propagate take cutting of well mature stem to a length of 16-18 cm and remove any flowers, leaves from it.
    2. Then dip bottom of the cutting in rooting hormone, and Place the 3/4 portion cutting into a small container with well-draining soil and water the plant.
    3. Rooting will start within 1-2 week.
