Description for Zamia Furfuracea

The plant has a short, sometimes subterranean trunk up to 20cm (8 inch) broad and high, usually with no ramification and marked with scars from old leaf bases. It grows very slowly when young, but its growth accelerates after the trunk matures. This fleshy trunk serves as a water reservoir in times of drought. When the plant is young, the fronds appear to rise directly from the ground.

Cardboard Palm Tree only looks like a palm. It s a Cycad native to Mexico and is much easier to please indoors than a real palm because of its tolerance of dry air.

Planting and care

Sunlight Soil Water Temperature Fertilizer
Bright light to full sun. Equal parts good-quality potting mix and sand for good drainage. Water thoroughly then allow top 2 in (5 cm) to dry out before watering again. Put it in a pot with drainage holes to prevent soggy soil. Cardboard palm grows the most spring through fall, so cut back on water in the winter months. Average room temperature 60-75F/16-24C year-round. It s cold-hardy down to 25F/-1C, but prefers to be warm. Feed once in spring and again in summer with a time-release fertilizer.

Caring for Zamia Furfuracea

  • Repot in spring when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a heavy container to prevent toppling, because plants can get top-heavy.
  • Older plants can be top-dressed instead by replacing the top 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) of soil with fresh soil.
  • Avoid getting water on the base of the plant or the foliage, which can cause this desert-dweller to rot.
  • Water the potting mix only.

Typical uses of Zamia Furfuracea

Special features:

Ornamental use: Cardboard palm makes a great accent or specimen plant. Use near the patio, in mixed foundation plantings or in perennial beds. This cycad is salt resistant and can be used in beach-side plantings. Also makes a great container plant for the patio or deck. It is a great house-plant tough enough to survive occasional neglect and harsh indoor environments.
