Eclipta Alba is commonly known as False Daisy, Trailing Eclipta. In Hindi it is known as Bhangra and Babri. The Sanskrit name is Bhringraja and Tekarajah. It is one of the ten auspicious flowers, mentioned in the Ayurveda which has been used since ages for hair and skin problems. It forms one of the ingredients used in black hair dye.

In Java, the leaves of the plant are used as a food item. In China and Brazil the plant is used as anti-venom for snake bites. It is a common weed which grows throughout India on waste grounds. It is also grown in Thailand, Brazil and China.

It is a prostrate, erect and multi branched plant which is an annual herb. Leaves have oppressed hairs on either side, around 10 cm long. It has composite flowers which are white in colour and have compressed rays.

Planting & Care

Soil: It can be grown in any type of soil but it prefers red loamy soil, with little moisture.

  • Land preparation for cultivation First the field should be flooded with water or sprinkler so that all the weeds germinate.
  • It should be continue for 20 to 30 days or start at rainy season .
  • Remove all the weeds first.
  • The field should be ploughed first and kept dry for 10 days so as all the weeds die out.
  • Then apply 150 Kg of rock phosphate for 1 acre.
  • Nursery Techniques for Eclipta Alba How seeds have to be raised Nursery beds of 6 inches height 3 feet and breadth 30 feet length.
  • Mix two part sand, one part red soil, and one part cow dung (dry).
  • Mix the three items together and make a bed of the above height and size.
  • The seeds are sown in rows about 6cm to 10 cm gently cover the seeds with soil.
  • Water this by rose can.
  • They will be ready within 60 days for transplantation.
  • Vegetative propagation By using terminal buds of length of 5cm try best with out flowers.
  • It can be planted in well prepared beds as above (seed beds) or nursery bags.
  • The plants will be ready for transplanting within 30 to 45 days.
  • Before planting the plants to main field water the field over night.
  • Make small pits of 15×15x15cm at a distance of 1 feet fill the pits with one part of cow dung dry, one part of red soil and one part of sand.
  • Plant the plants and the Irrigate it.
  • After the planting the plants into the field it should be watered 2 times a day for 5 days and after that every alternate days.
  • If you see weeds remove the same as soon as possible.

Harvesting: The whole plant is plucked after 9 to 10 month. The fresh plants are chopped and dried in shade. The seeds are collected when it turns black in colour. The average matured plants give 2500 Kg. per acre of dry materials.
Medicinal use:
  • This medicine is used for relieving ringworm, alopecia, spleen and liver enlargement, jaundice and hepatitis and also as a general tonic.
  • It is also effective in controlling cough, catarrah, indigestion, haemorrhage, vertigo, toothache and giddiness.

  • It has antiseptic properties and works like a wound relieving agent.
  • The root of the plant is used as a purgative and emetic and the paste of the leaves is effective to relieve scorpion sting.
  • It has alexipharmic, anthelmintic and bitter properties.

  • brahmi and bhrinraj oil really help hair grow.
  • because Eclipta alba (bhringraj) is the best known herb for preventing balding and premature graying.
  • The whole plant and seeds of bhringraj have great medicinal value.
  • Bhrngaraja is equally useful both, internally as well as externally.
  • A black dye obtained from Eclipta alba is also for dyeing hair and tattooing.

  • The Eclipta alba (bhringraj) leaf juice boiled with sesame or coconut oil for anointing the head to render the hair black and luxuriant has been practiced since ancient times.
  • Oil prepared out of amla (Indian gooseberry) and Eclipta and sometimes with brahmi is very popular formula as hair oil and is used to blacken the hair.

  • Eclipta is also used to enhance the memory and has a reputation as an antiaging agent in Ayurveda.
  • An herbal poultice is made with sesame oil and used over glandular swellings and various skin conditions.
  • The leaf juice is also effective when applied externally to treat minor cuts, abrasions, and burns.

Culinary use:

    Eclipta Alba consists of coumestans like demethylwedelolactone, wedelolactone, polyacetylenes, polypeptides, steroids, thiophene derivatives, and flavonoids.
