Description for Ougeinia dalbergioides

Ougeinia dalbergioides is a medium-sized, semi-deciduous tree, commonly attaining 40 to 50 cm and 7 to 14 meters in height. The stem is often crooked, but in some areas the tree is straight. The bark, varying from pale pinkish-brown to dark bluish grey, is somewhat rough and exfoliates in irregular thin soft scales.

Leaves pinnately trifoliate, smooth above and lightly pubescent below. Flowers light-pink to white. The previous year's branches generally do not bear flowers. Branches bearing flowers are leafless, while others retain leaves. Pods with a distinct scam, remaining closed until seeds germinate. Mature pods yield 2 to 5 viable seeds.

Seeds smooth brown, Seed production not heavy each year. The bark used as astringent, acrid, cooling, stimulant, anti-inflammatory, constipating, urinary astringent, anthelmintic, sudorific, depurative, styptic, febrifuge and rejuvenating.

The leaves are used in different combination for blood purification. The healers of the Bastar region use it both internally and externally in the treatment of leprosy. The gum is used in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery. The wood from this tree was used previously to make the wheels of the chariot.
