Description for Linum usitaissimum
Plants are branched & bushy. It is annual growing to 0.7 m. It is hardy to zone and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Jun to July, and the seeds ripen from Aug to September. The species are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects.
The plant is self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers moist soil. The plant can tolerate strong winds but not maritime exposure.
It is also used as a wood preservative and as a waterproofing for raincoats, slickers, and tarpaulins. The oil is also used in a spray on concrete roads to prevent ice and snow from sticking - it has the additional benefit of helping to preserve the concrete and prevent surface cracking and wear.
