Description for LeadWort
They are flowering herbaceous plants, subshrubs, or small shrubs growing to 0.3–1 m (0.98 to 3.28 ft) tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, 1–9 cm long, usually with a hairy margin. Some of the species are evergreen, others deciduous. The flowers are produced in a compact inflorescence, each flower with a five-lobed corolla; flower colour varies from pale to dark blue to red-purple. The fruit is a small bristly capsule containing a single seed.
Planting and care
Needing full sun for best growth and flowering, plumbago will grow on any fertile, well-drained soil, becoming drought-tolerant once established.
It is excellent as a foundation planting or when used in planters.
Caring for LeadWort
- Provide full sun or part shade (especially in hot summer areas) and moist but well-drained soil. Remove suckers in spring.
Grow outdoors year-round
Typical uses of LeadWort
Special features: It is a wiry, mat-forming perennial which spreads by rhizomes to form an attractive ground cover.
Oval to obovate, shiny, medium green leaves turn bronze-red in autumn.
Ornamental use: Late, long-flowering plant serves as excellent ground cover for sunny to partly shaded areas in the landscape. A good plant for interplanting with spring bulbs because foliage emerges late as the bulb foliage is dying back.
Medicinal use: Chitrak is used in treating intestinal troubles, dysentery, leucoderma, inflammation, piles, bronchitis, itching, diseases of the liver, and consumption. The leaves of this herb work well for treating laryngitis, rheumatism, diseases of the spleen, ring worm, scabies, and it acts as an aphrodisiac.
A tincture of the root bark is used as an anti-periodic. Chitrak root helps improve digestion and it stimulates the appetite. Chitrak root is also an acro-narcotic poison that can cause an abortion.
