It is a species of flowering plant. It grows 4 meters tall. Leaves are ovate & oblong. The leaves are rather coarse, heart-shaped, long and wide and colored deep green with slightly paler vein markings.

Bell-shaped calyx with a scarlet, star-shaped bloom peeping through a split in its tip.

The flowers are produced in cymes, each flower with a pure white to pale purple five-lobed calyx, and a red five-lobed corolla 2 cm long and in diameter. The contrast of scarlet and white is highly effective.
