Description for Alpinia Purpurata, Red Ginger

Plant height: 1.5 - 3 inches

The aplinia genus contains a number of lovely ornamental plants that you ve probably seen in high-end flower arrangements. They flower with upright cones of bright red or pink flowers on large stalks, and their leaves are frequently fragrant when crushed. Alpinia plant does not produce flowers for the first 3 years, but when they grow, they show huge football sized flowers, blooming all year around.

Planting and care

Gingers are grown from an underground rhizome. Best planting season is the rainy season. Gingers are planted in the pot or bed.

Sunlight: Dappled light.
Soil: Not very picky about potting soil.
Water: Grown under proper conditions, they need a steady, year-round supply of water.
Temperature: They can survive temperatures down to 50F.
Fertilizer: Feed with a weak liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season. Coated slow-release fertilizer pellets also work well.

Caring for Alpinia Purpurata

    Although they are not especially picky about their soil, it s not uncommon for the plants to experience a mild magnesium deficiency. In this case, supply them with a pinch or two Epsom salts every month or so to keep the leaves green and healthy.
