Guava (Psidium guajava), the apple of tropics, is one of the most common fruits in India. It is the fourth most important fruit in area and production after mango, banana and citrus. Being hardy, it gives an assured crop even with little care, and is good for rainfed areas also.
Successful Guava cultivation is grown under tropical and sub-tropical climate. In areas with distinct winter season, the yield tends to increase and quality improves.

Planting and care

  • Air-layering is the commercial method in practice for propagation of guava.
  • The most ideal time for air layering in guava is between April and June in the warm and humid climate.
  • Take a shoot from previous year's growth of 1cm in diameter is selected for air-layering.
  • Remove a ring of bark about 3cm long.
  • cover the area with wet sphagnum moss and tie with polyethylene film.
  • The rooting takes place in about 30-40 days.
  • Now make a cut the branch below the tied rooting material with root.
  • Plant this seedling in pot with potting mix to grow.
  • Watering should be done regularly.

    Temperature: 20 to 30 degree C
    Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer

    Caring for Guava Sardar L49

    • The tree should be planted in well-drained soil where its roots have room to spread.
    • Fertilize growing guavas every one to two months with organic fertilizer while young and then three to four times per year as the tree matures.
    • Guava trees need a high amount of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash, along with some magnesium for maximum fruit production.
    • Pruning should be done when it grows excess during dormant season.

    Special features: The leaves are used to season meat and other foods in Caribbean, Latin American and Asian cuisines. It is often added to chutneys, a sauce containing fruits or vegetables that is eaten with other dishes.

    Culinary use: Mature fruit use for making the Jams and jellies

    Medicinal use: The plant has been used to treat inflammation and kidney and urinary tract infections; as a diuretic and as a stomach tonic. Other uses include carminative action and treatment of cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis, and gout. It also has been used for leukorrhea and yeast infections.
