Planting and care

Dianthus can be propagated by Seeds, Cutting and Division.

By Seeds :

  • Prepare a planting medium of three parts potting soil, one part sand, one part peat moss and two parts organic compost and mix well.
  • Fill pots larger than 5 inch with the potting mix.
  • Moisten the mix, then sprinkle seeds on the surface, cover lightly with some of the soil (1/8 inch).
  • Mist the seeds with water and place in a sunny location and keep moist until the seeds have germinated.
  • Seeds will germinate in approximately eight to 10 -15 days.
  • Transplant to a permanent sunny outdoor location when seedlings are 3 to 4 inches tall.

  • By Cutting:
  • Cuttings should be taken in June or July, after the plant has flowered.
  • Water the plant well before taking a cutting.
  • It is best to take cuttings on an overcast day to reduce shock to the parent plant.
  • Root cuttings in a 50/50 mixture of vermiculite and sand.
  • Fill 5 inch starter pots with the rooting medium.
  • Cut approximately 1/4 inch below a node. Make sure that the cutting has several well developed leaf nodes.
  • Dip the cutting in rooting hormone powder.
  • The bottom leaf node should be included in the portion of the stem dipped in the rooting hormone.
  • Push a hole in the rooting medium with the end of a pencil.
  • Place the cutting in the hole and gently settle the mixture to surround and support the cutting.
  • Keep cuttings moist and in a sunny location until firmly rooted.
  • If feasible, cover with a glass or plastic dome to conserve moisture.
  • Transplant when multiple, sturdy roots have developed and new leaf growth is evident.

  • By Division:
  • Diathus forms large, spreading mounds as the plant matures.
  • These mounds can be dug up every 2-3 years and divided for replanting.
  • Divide each clump into 3- to 6-inch sections and transplant to a new, sunny site.
  • Water the clumps well before dividing and water again after replanting to reduce transplant shock.
  • Sunlight: Full sun
