This Asian tropical tree has a straight tall tree and its leaves are deciduous in winter. Red flowers with 5 petals appear in the spring before the new foliage. It produces a capsule which, when ripe, contains white fibres like cotton. Its trunk bears spikes to deter attacks by animals. Although its stout trunk suggests that it is useful for timber, its wood is too soft to be very useful.

Common name: Silk cotton tree, Salmali, Bombax ceiba, Simul tree
Color: White with pink streaking
Bloom time: April
Height: 5.00 to 8.00 feet
Difficulty level: easy to grow

Planting & Care
They are usually shipped in the spring as bare roots when plants are fully dormant, well before they have leafed out. They’ll look like a bundle of sticks on arrival. Note, they are not dead—simply dormant. If you are buying container-grown plants (vs. bare-root plants), plant them by May or early June for best results.

Sunlight: Part shade

Soil: well-drained soil

Water: Medium

Temprature: 500 °C

Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer

Care:
  • Always wear safety goggles; branches can whip back when released.
  • Start with pruning shears for smaller growth.
  • Use loppers, which look like giant, long-handle shears, for growth that is more than half an inch thick.
  • A small pruning saw is handy, as it cuts on both the push and the pull.
  • Deadhead religiously and keep beds clean.
  • Every leaf has a growth bud, so removing old flower blossoms encourages the plant to make more flowers instead of using the energy to make seeds

Special Feature:
Excellent flowering shrub for lawns, shrub borders, backgrounds, informal hedges and around homes in mild winter locations. When grown outside their specified hardiness range, camellias are used primarily as conservatory plants, and they perform quite well in this environment. Since they react badly to change (e.g., drop their buds), it is usually not recommended that they be moved outside in the summer months and then returned inside in the fall.
Use
Ornamental use:
  • The plant is used for ornamental purpose

Note:
Camellias are susceptible to a number of fungal diseases including leaf spots, black mold, flower blight, canker and root rot. Scale can be a troublesome insect pest. Aphids, thrips, mealybugs and mites may appear. Yellow leaves may mean too little acidity in the soil. Some flower bud dropping may be natural, but sometimes may be caused by overwatering or underwatering.
