Planting and care
An accurate soil test will tell you where your pH currently stands. - Start with pruning shears for smaller growth. Use loppers, which look like giant, long-handle shears, for growth that is more than half an inch thick. A small pruning saw is handy, as it cuts on both the push and the pull.

Medicinal use: Coptis chinensis is an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine. Sometimes referred to as huang lian or goldthread, extracts of the herb s roots are available in dietary supplement form. Often used to treat gastrointestinal problems, Coptis chinensis is also said to protect against some forms of cancer.
