Description for Pinus longifolia
A pine is any conifer in the genus Pinus, /ˈpiËÂnuËÂs/, of the family Pinaceae. Pinus is the sole genus in the subfamily Pinoideae.
Planting and care
Soak Italian stone pine seeds for 24 hours to scarify, or soften, the covering on the seed. Place the seeds in a zippered plastic bag full of damp -- not wet -- sphagnum moss and place in the vegetable bin of your refrigerator for 60 to 90 days to stratify, or cool, the seeds to trigger germination.
Caring for Pinus longifolia
- Fill pots with moist, soil-less starter mix. You can make your own mix by combining equal parts fine peat moss, sand and vermiculite.
Put two scarified and stratified seeds in the filled pots and cover them with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of starter mix.
Typical uses of Pinus longifolia
Special features: An excellent specimen tree for lawns or parks. Site in areas with adequate space to accommodate future growth. May be planted as a hedge, however, with regular shearing to control growth and shape.
Ornamental use: The plant is used for ornamental purpose.
