Arundo donax, giant cane, is a tall perennial cane growing in damp soils, either fresh or moderately saline. It is one of the several species of the so-called reed.

Common name: giant reed
Color: Purple
Bloom time: September to October
Height: 12.00 to 20.00 feet
Difficulty level: easy to grow

Planting & Care
The vining varieties require a support structure as some can get 15 feet tall. All plants prefer sun to light shade sites with well-draining and moderately fertile soil. Install the plant in the ground at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot. Most plants are grafted onto the common rootstock because of its superior hardiness.

Sunlight: full sun to part shade

Soil: well-drained soil

Water: medium

Temprature: 9 to 28.5°C

Fertilizer: apply any organic fertilizer

Care:
  • Where temperatures stay below freezing during winter, enclose the plant with a sturdy mesh cylinder, filling the enclosure with compost, mulch, dry wood chips, pine needles, or chopped leaves.
  • Don’t use heavy, wet, maple leaves for mulch.
  • Mulch instead with oak leaves, pine needles, compost, or straw.

Special Feature:
Giant reed is best grown as a specimen or accent for border backgrounds or near water bodies. It may be used in large water gardens or along ponds. Young plants can be effectively used as container specimens. Inflorescences are attractive as cut flowers or for dried arrangements.
