Description for Sparaxis (Random Color)

The flowers are arranged in spikes at the tips of the flowering branches. Each flower is subtended by two leafy flower bracts. These stalkless flowers are predominantly white or cream, but may occasionally be pale yellow or purple-tinged (especially on their undersides). Flowering occurs mainly during spring and early summer.

Planting and care

  • Choose a location in full sun and be sure the soil is well-drained.
  • The one environment that do not tolerate is hot and wet.
  • Sowing season of Sparaxis is in the summer and winter season.
  • It should be planted at 10 to 12 cm deep; maintaining 10 to 12 cm spacing between two bulbs.
  • This bulb requires loose and porous potting soil.
  • Water only when the soil feels dry to touch
  • Sparaxis require very little maintenance.

  • Use the potting mix for bulb plantation as:
  • Garden soil + Compost + Perlite + Sand (2:2:1:1)
  • Soil + Cocopeat + vermicompost (2:1:2)
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
    Soil: Sandy loam soil
    Water: Moderately
    Temperature: 20 to 30 degrees Celsius
    Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer.

    Caring for Sparaxis

    • Fertilize the plant mostly in the spring season, flower bud stage.
    • Water a plant when the soil feels dry to touch. If there is a dry spell and it does not rain, you must water the bulbs weekly until the ground freezes.
    • Apply compost annually to provide nutrients needed for future blooms.
