Description

Nymphaea is a genus of hardy and tender aquatic plants in the family Nymphaeaceae.

Nymphaea mexicana is aquatic rhizomatous perennial herb, sometimes with stolons, as well. The leaves grow from the rhizome on long petioles. Most of them float on the surface of the water.

Flowers are floating or emersed, 6-11 cm in diameter, opening and closing diurnally, only sepals and outermost petals in distinct whorls of 4. Best grown in moist, acidic, humusy soils in part shade to full shade. Plants may be grown from seed, but will not flower for 4-5 yea Quicker and better results are obtained from planting corms which are sold by many bulb suppliers and nurseries. In addition, offsets from mature plants may be harvested and planted.
