The aplinia genus contains a number of lovely ornamental plants that you have probably seen in high-end flower arrangements. They flower with upright cones of bright red or pink flowers on large stalks, and their leaves are frequently fragrant when crushed.

Alpinia plant does not produce flowers for the first 3 years, but when they grow, they show huge football sized flowers, blooming all year around. Leaves oblong, shiny green. Inflorescences terminal on leafy shoots, unbranched (occasionally branched in cultivated forms), basically cylindrical.
