These trees are found in places of diverse geological backgrounds, from the rainforests of North East India to Japan, including countries like Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, etc. They grow in high altitude areas that are 300-1,500 m above sea level and in natural rainforests. In India it is found naturally in Assam region. And in other parts it is grown by artificial techniques.

Agarwood, a high value commercial crop that is native to India, enjoys a good demand in both national and international markets. Known better as agar or oodh (as in agarbathi), it is easy to grow, maintenance-free and non-labour-intensive. Most of all, it is being perceived as a very good alternative to silver oak, promising good revenue in just about eight years.

Common name: Agarwood, Aloeswood, Eaglewood, Adlerholz (German), Oud, Oudh
Height: Up to 40 meters high with a trunk diameter of up to 1.5-2.5 meters
Difficulty level: Easy

Planting & Care
Under average condition spacing ranges between 2.5-5 m, (initially accommodating about 1700 plants per hectare) which at later stages i.e., after 8-10 years of growth maintained at 4-5 m by harvesting in phase manner.
When the planting is raised with some other forest species the spacing may be given accordingly. The distance for avenues and public places depends upon the situations and purpose of planting which may range between 3-4 m.
Planting of the saplings is done in well-prepared pits of size 50 x 50 x 50 cm made in advance and preferably in the evening time or during the cloudy weather.

After planting staking should be done to keep the seedling in upright position and the soil around the plant should be firmly consolidated. Immediately after planting watering is necessary. In no case, the soil around the root be disturbed or removed during planting.
In the open and in public places the newly planted seedlings are to be protected in cages till they grow fairly large.
For better and faster growth of the plant, the pits should be weeded and hoed to keep the soil loose and free from weeds.

Sunlight: It is a sun-loving plant and requires lot of sunshine.

Soil: Though agarwood can be grown in a variety of soils, forest soil that is rich in organic content is ideal for its growth. If irrigated well, agarwood can grow even in dry lands. Though wet and acidic soil is suitable for agar plants, they do not grow well in extremely marshy conditions. ,br/.
Fungi, that are essential for the growth of aromatic resins in agarwood trees, naturally occur in an atmosphere that is high in moisture content.

Water: Agar plants do not require any special irrigation facilities. In case the plantation is in dry or infertile land, saplings need to be watered thrice a month from December to May.

Fertilizer: Agar is a plant that grows fast naturally. If cultivated in forest land or in soil rich in organic content, then there is no need for the use of manure. Otherwise, the use of chemical fertilizers is in practice, especially while cultivating agar wood as a commercial crop. When the plants step into their second year, chemical fertilizer (N.P. K) is administered to them in the ratio of 10:10:4.

The fertilizer meant for that particular year should be administered in two instalments. After five years, the level of nitrogen should be slightly increased and given during the months of May-June and September to ensure the good growth of resin wood and to attract fungi.

  • When agarwood trees are damaged either naturally or artificially, fungus enters the tree.
  • As the fungal infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin in response to the attack, which results in a very dense, dark, resin embedded heartwood.
  • Here, fungi only spreads primary infection and does not multiply or attack the entire tree.
  • Agarwood can grow only when the tree has fungal infection.
  • When agarwood trees are damaged either naturally or artificially, fungus enters the tree.
  • As the fungal infection progresses, the tree produces a dark aromatic resin in response to the fungal attack, which results in a very dense, dark, resin embedded heartwood.
  • Here, fungi only spreads primary infection and does not multiply or attack the entire tree.
  • Also, the tree doesn t spread or give rise to any kind of fungus.

  • Agarwood plants need attention only in their initial stages.
  • Later, till the time of harvest, they do not need much attention and they are not labour-dependent.
  • In our Modern techniques of cultivation we can manage 100 acres of agar wood with just 2 labours.
  • Grafting causes cuts on the bark of the tree, making the tree susceptible to fungal attacks and thereby assisting the production of agarwood.

Special Feature:
The agarwood is very popular as ‘the wood of the Gods’, It is because of its uses range from incense for religious ceremonies, perfume for the Arabic world, medicinal wine in Korea and ornamental functions in China.
As a healthy tree the Aquilaria is worth next to nothing, but wounded its defence mechanisms produce agarwood and the tree becomes a valuable commodity. Today the range of agarwood products and their uses is seemingly endless.
Medicinal use:
  • The oil is also used in the production of traditional medicine as anti-asthma anti-toxic, antioxidant, hypertension (anti-stress), hepatitis, sirosis, diuretic, painkiller, and many other diseases.

Ornamental use:
  • Most of the wood, however, is processed and either turned into oil which is used in perfumes and other cosmetic products, or the agarwood chips are ground into powder which is used as the raw material for incense making.
