The psychopsis papilio, or butterfly orchid, is a remarkable specimen that can be grown by the experienced gardener and the novice alike. Its requirements are not especially complicated, and its beauty makes it worth the small amount of attention necessary to maintain it. Butterfly orchids are named for their resemblance to a resting butterfly.

They have long flowering stems that produce blooms in rapid succession. The blooms vary in color and are rougher to the touch than most flowers.
Color: Phalaenopsis is often called “the butterfly orchid” because of its charming flowers of various shapes, sizes, patterns and colors that remind us of tropical butterflies. A graceful flower lip of an often contrasting color stands out among the spectacularly patterned or smoothly colored petals of the flower that reaches 8 cm in diameter.
Height: Can reach about two feet of height when fully grown.
Difficulty level: Easy

Planting & Care
Schizanthus plants dislike extremes of heat or cold, preferring cool, moist conditions. They bloom best when grown in full sun, however, in warmer climates they should planted in light shade to prolong their growing season. Deeder the Garden Gnome

After planting, water them regularly, keeping the soil moist throughout the summer and early fall.
Feed your Schizanthus about every two weeks with a balanced, 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer.

Soil: Place butterfly orchids in soil with excellent drainage. These plants grow naturally in rather dry forests and will fade quickly in waterlogged soil. Add pebbles or small chunks of bark to the soil to ensure good drainage.

Water: Water these orchids sparingly. The butterfly orchid has a rather thin, wispy root structure, making it highly susceptible to root rot. Orchids do prefer some humidity in the air, but this variety will need to drain away excess moisture. Water once a week or when soil feels dry to the touch.

Temprature: Butterfly orchids prefer a temperature range of 60 to 70 degrees F.

Fertilizer: Phalaenopsis orchid absorbs nutrients through the roots therefore the fertilizers should all be water-soluble and less concentrated. In any case you cannot fertilize a dry substrate, it will burn the roots, first you need to water the plant. After this you need to water the plant with the dissolved fertilizer and make sure for the water to drain.
If you plant has problems with roots it cannot be fertilized. In this case you can spray the plant with dissolved fertilizer.

Care:
  • Growing Butterfly Flowers from Seed -Schizanthus seeds tend to be very slow to germinate, so you may want to purchase bedding plants from your garden center.
  • Butterfly Flower seeds can be started indoors twelve weeks before your last frost date.
  • Do not cover the seeds with soil, but cover the tray with black plastic or keep it in a dark location until the seeds germinate in 20-25 days Keep the temperature within the growing medium at 60°-70°.
  • Plant Butterfly Flowers in the garden, 12 inches apart in rich, well draining soil when all danger of frost has passed.
