Planting & Care

  • Many people wonder how to grow bok choy.
  • As said earlier, growing bok choy is done best in cool weather.
  • You can get two crops a year, in the spring and in the fall.
  • If you are planting bok choy indoors, you want to start it before the last frost and then transplant your growing bok choy two weeks later.
  • Because bok choy is a cold weather vegetable, it can withstand cooler temperatures, so you could always start them directly in the ground at this point as well.
  • Although you will be planting bok choy early in the season, you can start a second crop in late summer to be ready late fall.
  • They only take 45-50 days to maturity, so this is easily done.
  • I have found that bok choy care is not really very tedious.
  • Growing bok choy requires rich, loose soil.
  • You should fertilize your bok choy early after planting.
  • Once your seedlings are about four inches tall, you will want to thin your growing bok choy to six to ten inches apart.
  • If you have more than one row, place the rows 18 to 30 inches apart.
  • You should keep your garden well weeded so the weeds don’t take away the nutrients from your bok choy plants.

Harvesting: When you harvest bok choy, be sure to do it before the hot weather sets in with your first crop. Hot weather tends to make the bok choy go into seed very quickly. These are the first plants in the garden each spring because they can survive temperatures below 30 degrees F. Because you will be planting bok choy early, you will be harvesting it early as well. Bok choy is a non-heading cabbage. It grows close together with leaves and stalks much like celery. You will want to harvest bok choy when it reaches twelve to eighteen inches tall. This vegetable is great in soups, salads and stir-fries. It is very fresh, crisp and versatile.

  • While not as sensitive to heat and cold as Chinese cabbage, spring crops may bolt prematurely if young plants are exposed to frost or a week of nighttime temperatures below 50 F.
  • Wait until after last frost date to direct seed or transplant out.
  • Start transplants inside 4 to 6 weeks before last frost date.
  • Transplant 6 to 12 inches apart in rows 18 to 30 inches apart.
  • Use the closer spacings for smaller varieties.
  • Plant direct-seeded spring crops 1/4 inch deep and about 1 inch apart in rows 18 to 30 inches apart.
  • Thin to 6- to 12-inch spacings.
  • Use thinnings in salads.
  • For fall crops, direct seed 1/4 inch deep in rows 18 to 30 inches apart in summer.
  • Thin to 6- to 12- inch spacings.
  • Or set transplants out at 6- to 12-inch spacings 4 to 6 weeks before first frost.
  • Mulch fall crops heavily and provide adequate moisture to avoid premature bolting.

Special Feature:

The tree provides wood, resin, fodder, medicine, gum and dye.
The wood is soft but durable even in eater and is used to make well curbs and water scoops. Charcoal of good quality is made from its wood.
The wood pulp is used for newsprint manufacturing.
The leaves are joined together to make a leaf plate to serve food and even bowls are prepared from the leaves.
The flowers yield a color that is used to dye fabric and is also used a a color in the Holi, the traditional Indian festival of colors.
The tree provides a gum that contains tannins that are used in the leather industry as well as in drugs. The gum is also used in some food preparations.
The flowers act as a bait to attract mosquitoes to lay their eggs. They die when they enter the flower as they are not able to come out as they get caught in the fluid contained in the flower. The eggs that these mosquitoes lay in the fluid do not hatch as well.
