Native to Central and South America and a relative of our skunk cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, Dieffenbachia is a broad-leaved foliage plant with thick succulent stems.

The large and showy dieffenbachia can be the perfect living decoration for the home or office. When you learn how to care for a dieffenbachia plant, you’ll find it to be adaptable to different kinds of lighting and conditions.

Common name: Dumbcane or leopard lily
Height: 4 to 5 feet.
Difficulty level: Easy.

Planting & Care
With a minimum temperature of 5 °C (41 °F), dieffenbachia must be grown indoors in temperate areas.
They need light, but filtered sunlight through a window is usually sufficient.
They also need moderately moist soil, which should be regularly fertilized with a proprietary house plant fertilizer.

Leaves will periodically roll up and fall off to make way for new leaves.
Yellowing of the leaves is generally a sign of problematic conditions, such as a nutrient deficiency in the soil.
Dieffenbachia responds well to hot temperatures and dry climates.

Sunlight: Bright light but not direct sunlight.

Soil: Well draining soil.

Water: Lots of water during the summer. Soil stays moist but not wet.
During the winter season watering should be reduced.

Temprature: Normal temperature 17–27 °C

Fertilizer: During the primary growing season – March Through October – feed every other week when watering using a complete liquid food. During the winter months use NO fertilizer and water only.

Care:
  • When potting or repotting plants, springtime is best just before the growing season begins.
  • Rotate the dieffenbachia house plant regularly to provide adequate light to all sides of the plant and prevent it from reaching toward the light on one side.

Use
Ornamental use:
  • The large and showy dieffenbachia can be the perfect living decoration for the home or office.

Note:
It’s also important to note that the leaves, if chewed or eaten, can cause temporary swelling of the tongue and throat, leading to a temporary loss of speech. While this is usually not serious, it can cause suffocation. Avoid placing the dumbcane plant where curious children or pets might be tempted to taste it.
