Planting & Care
When grown in pots or planters, Cinerarias should be planted in a loose, rich, peat moss based potting mix with good drainage. Once they begin to bloom they prefer to be kept somewhat root-bound. Indoors, keep your Cineraria in filtered sun or bright light. Do not allow the soil to dry out, but be careful not to over water. Cinerarias like it cool, and will bloom for a much longer period with daytime temperatures of 65° and 50°-55° at night.

Sunlight: Cineraria need a high light area but should be away from any direct light. They also like a more humid environment. This can be achieved by placing the pot on a tray of pebbles that is filled with water.

Soil: Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Water: Keep soil moist throughout the growing season.

Temprature: Cinerarias like cool temperatures around 45° to 55° F.

Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer.

  • Loosen soil and pull weeds in an area with full sun to partial shade, The hotter your climate, the shadier the site you should select.
  • Cineraria do not perform well when the temperature is over 68 degrees or under 32 F, A site under a tree or architectural overhang can protect the plants from occasional frost.
  • In areas where they are perennial, the plants will go dormant over the summer.
  • Dig holes 12 inches apart on center for the smaller florist cineraria, which grows 12 inches wide and tall, and 18 inches apart for tall cineraria, which grows up to 3 feet tall and wide.
  • Water the plant in and keep it moderately moist throughout the growing season.
  • Protect the plants from frost with sheets or shade cloth supported on bamboo poles on cold nights, removing the protection when temperatures warm during the day.
  • Pinch off the blooms as they fade to keep the plants blooming as long as possible and to prevent reseeding, Keep the plant deadheaded to prevent reseeding.
  • Shear the plants down to the ground after they fade, or pull them out by the roots when they are not perennial in your area.
  • Perennials will grow back from the roots in the fall, grow until temperatures drop, and then begin growing again in early spring.

Harvesting: Keep several flowers on the plants to go to seed if you want to start them from seed next year. Harvest them when they are white and fluffy.

  • Cinerarias like cool temperatures around 45° to 55° F.
  • When temperatures are to warm, above 60°, the flowers open and die quicker.
  • Cold drafts are another possible problem for this plant.
  • They can cause wilting or yellow leaves to develop.
  • This plant needs consistent water and should feel moist at all times.
  • Cineraria need a high light area but should be away from any direct light.
  • They also like a more humid environment.
  • This can be achieved by placing the pot on a tray of pebbles that is filled with water.
