Mimosa pudica is a creeping annual or perennial herb of the pea family Fabaceae often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, defending themselves from harm, and re-open a few minutes later.

Common name: Sensitive plant
Color: green
Bloom time: Non-flowering
Height: 3.00 to 4.00 feet
Difficulty level: easy to grow

Planting & Care
Choose a warm, sheltered location when growing. The vining varieties require a support structure as some can get 15 feet tall. All plants prefer sun to light shade sites with well-draining and moderately fertile soil. Install the plant in the ground at the same level it was growing in the nursery pot.

Sunlight: Part shade to full shade

Soil: well-drained soil

Water: Medium to wet

Temprature: 75-85°F/24-29°C

Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer

Care:
  • plant care is not difficult but does require vigilance.
  • The vines need to be trained early when they are young.
  • You may use plant ties or just weave them through trellis sections.
  • Fertilize the plant in spring just before new growth appears.
  • Pinch off the tips of the vines in the second year to promote branching which will fill the trellis with bushy growth.

Special Feature:
Best in wet woodland gardens and moist locations along streams and ponds. Also appropriate for shaded areas of a native plant garden or naturalized planting.
Use
Ornamental use:
  • The plant is used for ornamental purpose.

Note:
No serious insect or disease problems. Foliage may depreciate as summer progresses in hot climates, particularly if soils are not kept moist.
