Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar and Pacific Islands.

Planting & Care
Fall or spring is the most suitable time for planting the gardenia bush. As for outdoor gardenia care, you should keep in mind that when the gardenia plant is grown outdoors, it generally prefers to be kept in partial shade. Gardenias also prefer moist, but well-drained acidic soil with plenty of organic matter.

Care:
  • The dry, short days of winter will likely be the most troublesome, especially if the gardenia bush is not given enough humidity.
  • Moving plants to southern-facing windows and/or supplementing them with grow lights are good ways to improve light conditions during winter.


Special Feature:
In the St. Louis region, gardenias are grown as pot or larger container plants. They grow well in greenhouses and conservatories, but can also thrive when placed outdoors during the summer months and returned to moderate indoor temperatures in the fall.

Culinary use:
  • Gardenia Oil has a sweet floral scent.
  • The essential oil is extracted by enfleurage, due to the fact of the delicacy of the Gardenia flower.
  • The petals are the most fragrant are soaked in fat.
  • The fat absorbs the fragrance of the Gardenia flower and then placed in alcohol to dissolve.


Note:
Problems include powdery mildew, leaf spots, dieback, anthracnose, sooty mold, whiteflies, mealybugs, scales, aphids and spider mites. These insects are often serious pests.
