It is a deciduous tree, light-demanding, and somewhat frost-sensitive; it needs good drainage. Its natural habitat is the humid tropics with a well-distributed annual rainfall, and it has also done well on deep soils in cool frost-free tropical uplands. It grows rapidly on good sites, but tends to be disappointing on some poorer sites, where rapid growth for a few years may be followed by stagnation. It does not form root nodules with Rhizobium species, and hence does not fix nitrogen.

Planting & Care
Acrocarpus fraxinifolius (Pink Cedar) A fast growing large deciduous tree that can have a buttressed base with a straight trunk of a light gray coloured bark and spreading horizontal stems that form a rounded crown. In the tropics this tree is known to reach great heights (120 feet or more) but is more likely to be an tree to no more than 70 feet in southern California.

It has bipinnately compound leaves with 5 to 6 pairs of dark green 3 inch long oblong leaflets that are a bright reddish pink colour when first emerging, then a pinkish yellow and finally a lime green colour before maturing, giving the tree a multicoloured look at the branch tips much of the spring and summer. In the early spring, just before or as the tree first leafs out, appear the many scarlet-red flowers in 3 to 6 inch long dense axillary racemes near, but not at, the branch tips.

The flowers are composed of ½ long green petals that are fairly inconspicuous but the scarlet coloured 1 inch long stamens protrude, giving the inflorescence a bit of a bottle-brush look. Plant in full sun and irrigate deeply regularly to occasionally. Hardiness is not well known but this tree has survived undamaged in several locations for 40 years or more and likely is tolerant to night-time dips to at least 28° F.

Sunlight: Full Sun

Soil: Grows best in deep, well-drained, clayey loam soils with a pH of 4-7.

Water: Medium Water Needs

Temprature: Tolerant to night-time dips to at least 28° F.

Care:
  • The fruit ripens just before the onset of the monsoon.
  • The seed may germinate almost immediately, but it may also may lie dormant for up to a year.
  • In India regeneration is reported to be plentiful.
  • Seedlings can withstand some shade, but later full light is preferred.

Special Feature:
The wood is suitable for indoor construction, furniture, fence posts, beehives, boxes, packing cases, roof shingles, veneer and plywood. It is also used as firewood and for charcoal production. The wood is used to produce pulp for paper, but is rated as second-class for that purpose.

Acrocarpus fraxinifolius is widely planted as ornamental tree. The foliage is used as fodder, and the flowers are a source of nectar for honey bees. The tree has been recommended for reinforcing river banks and to stabilize terraces, and for use in agroforestry systems, although it has been reported to compete with crops. It produces good mulch. It is grown for shade in coffee and tea plantations, sometimes also in timber plantations and as windbreak.
