  • This name is a synonym of Magnolia champaca. This evergreen, semi tropical large shrub or tree has large mid-green leaves and sweetly fragrant orange flowers comes in April-May. Fruits are oval shaped and clustered along a spike. Twigs are ascending and forming a narrow umbelliform crown.

    Seed germination usually occurs within 4 to 6 weeks although some seeds may take much longer. The tree is planted near Temples and as an ornamental in parks, and its timber used in woodworking. Flowers are used as votive offerings and are often worn in hair as an adorment.

    Planting and care

    • Plant the Champaca in the garden in the spring
    • Choose the sunniest spot in your garden and dig a 12-inch deep hole
    • If the plant is slightly bigger, then dig a slightly deeper hole
    • Also, prepare the soil with fertilizers and plant feed before planting the tree
    • Plant the tree deep and then pack the soil
    • However, make sure that the soil is loosely packed to enhance water absorption
    • Control the weed
    • Water the tree when the soil is dry to the touch
    • Prune only to shape the tree and remove dead branches

    Michelia champaca care

    • Take 4-inch pots on a tray
    • Fill the bottom third of each pot with a high-quality acidic potting soil
    • Add sterile seed-starting mix to the top two thirds of the pot
    • Water thoroughly to ensure that the soil is moist throughout the pot
    • Insert one seed into each pot and barely cover with seed-starting mix
    • Cover the pots with plastic wrap and place in a warm location
    • Check the soil every two to three days to ensure that it is still moist
    • Mist with a spray bottle if the soil begins to dry out, then replace the plastic wrap to maintain a consistent moisture level
    • Maintain a constant temperature of 80 to 85 degrees F until the seeds germinate, between one and six weeks
    • Champaca has a relatively low germination rate, between 40 and 50 percent
