Flowers of the allium plant rise above the foliage, offering growing alliums in the colors of white, pink, purple, yellow and blue. Flowers of the allium plant have round heads too, which range from a few to several inches around.

Common name: Allium
Color: White, pink, purple, yellow and blue.
Bloom time: June to August
Height: 12″ to 24″ high.
Difficulty level: Easy

Planting & Care
To make them more perennial, bulbs should be planted deeply, at least twice the depth of the bulb. Dig a hole or trench, and on heavy soil spread a 5cm layer of grit (or spent compost) all over the bottom. Push your bulbs into the bottom of the trench/hole, leaving a gap of at least 3 times the bulb width between each bulb (see above) and then cover them up – if on heavy soil, mix in about one-third grit to two-thirds soil. After planting, firm the ground with your hand (using your feet can trample the crowns) to get rid of air pockets – watering will help this too.

Sunlight: Full sun

Soil: Well-drained soil

Water: Keep soil moist throughout the growing season.

Temprature: 65°-70°.

Fertilizer: Apply organic fertilizer.

  • Include several allium bulbs in your autumn bulb planting for height and color in the spring garden.
  • Scatter them among bulbs of lilies, crocus and other of your favorite spring blooming bulbs for tall, sporadic color throughout your beds next year.
  • When the soil has warmed, plant seeds of the candytuft flower and other short perennial flowers to cover foliage of the growing alliums as they wither away when the show is done.
  • Plant the allium bulb three times its height deep in well-draining soil in a sunny location.
  • Growing alliums in the flower bed may deter aphids, which often like to suck on tender new growth of other spring blooms.
  • Growing alliums in the garden deters rodents, the peach borer and even the destructive Japanese beetle.
  • Allium care is simple if planted in the right soil and sunlight.
  • The allium plant needs only infrequent watering, weeding and fertilization.
  • These needs may be taken care of by rainfall and by adding organic mulch after planting.
  • An organic, pre-emergence weed block or mulch may cut down on weeding.
  • Learning how to plant allium bulb can be beneficial to many of your other growing specimens.
  • Learning how to grow alliums is a useful garden trick that you will practice for years to come.

Harvesting: Once the flowering period is over, watering is withheld. After the leaves have dried up, bulbs can be lifted, dried & stored.

  • All bulbs do best if you minimize the number of leaves you cut when you pick the flowers.
  • When you cut, make sure you leave a short section of the leafy part of the stem to give the bulb a chance to make enough food to survive through the dormant period.
  • It is also important to leave the browning foliage on your bulbs until every leaf has died right down.
  • Don’t be tempted to clear them up until every leaf is completely brown.
  • This is the time when bulbs photosynthesise and create food, stored in the bulb to help next year’s flower.
  • If you remove the leaves half way through this process, you’re less likely to have a flower the following year.
  • I don’t lift any of my bulbs in the garden; planted deeply and mulched with a generous blanket of mushroom compost I leave them in the ground to over-winter.
  • If you ve grown them in containers and you notice any small bulblets these can be kept and planted into a separate pot, and will reach flowering size in a couple of years time.

Special Feature:
The blooms of these plants are mostly globes on slim, straight stems, often of incredible size. Some blossoms are as large as soccer balls and perch atop 3½ foot stalks.
Ornamental use:
  • The plant is used for ornamental purpose and in flower beds.
