Winter hardy to USDA Zones 10-12 where it may be grown in moist, humusy, well-drained soils in part shade. In St. Louis, it is easily grown indoors as a houseplant. Use a peaty, soil-based potting mix.

Planting & Care
Gather your potting supplies. Boston ferns will do best in a potting mixture of peat moss, sand, and garden soil. Pot your fern. Place your fern outdoors in a warm, humid environment. Put your Boston fern in an appropriate room indoors. Provide your fern with indirect sunlight.

Care:
  • When you care for Boston fern plants indoors, it is a good idea to provide additional humidity for them, especially in the winter.
  • Most homes are rather dry, even more when heaters are running.
  • For extra humidity care for Boston fern, try setting your fern’s pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water.
  • You can also try lightly misting your fern one to two times a week to help it get the humidity it needs.


Special Feature:
As an indoor fern, it is perhaps best for pedestals or hanging baskets. Locations in or near bathrooms or kitchens may have better humidity. Where winter hardy outdoors, it may be grown in groups or massed in shady areas, or it may be sited at the base of shrubs or around trees.
