Ornamental kale plants can make a wonderful red, pink, purple, or white show in the cool season garden, with very minimal care. Let’s read on to learn more about growing flowering kale in the garden.

When fall and winter rolls around, gardeners can either pack up their garden tools or continue their passion throughout the cooler seasons of the year. Ornamental kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is the perfect cool season annual to add colour and interest to the fall and winter garden.

Common name: ornamental cabbage
Bloom time: Rarely flowers. Insignificant
Height: Height: 1.00 to 1.50 feet
Spread: 1.00 to 1.50 feet
Difficulty level: Easy

Planting & Care
Easily grown in organically rich, consistently moist, well-drained loams in full sun. Ornamental cabbage and kale are cool weather plants that need cool temperatures to produce best leaf colours. In St. Louis, they are best grown in the cool temperatures of fall, but may also be grown in early spring.
If grown in summer, however, plants will need some afternoon shade, perhaps to survive, but the foliage will fail to produce good leaf colour in the absence of cool temperatures. Plants generally grow poorly when daytime temperatures begin to consistently exceed 80 degrees F. Cultivars may often be grown from seed or plants may be purchased in cell packs from nurseries.

Sunlight: Grow ornamental kale in full sun

Soil: Rich, organic soil

Water: Water ornamental kale if the soil dries out about 1 inch deep. Water with 1 inch of water so the water seeps deep into the soil. If your fall and winters are normally wet, you might not need to water them at all.

Temprature: As long as temperatures remain above 5 degrees Fahrenheit, ornamental kale can survive.

Fertilizer: Fertilize ornamental kale during the growing season, starting at planting time. Use a balanced fertilizer, such as 12-12-12, applying about 1 1/2 tsp. per plant.

Care:
  • Growing Kale and Ornamental Cabbage from Seed.
  • Kale seeds require light for germination, so do not cover them with soil.
  • It is best to sow Kale seeds directly into the garden, where they are to grow.
  • The exact timing for sowing and planting will depend on your local conditions.
  • Sow Kale seeds about six to ten weeks before the first anticipated frost.
  • Plant the seeds in rows, spaced 18 to 24 inches apart, allowing 6 inches between seeds.
  • Keep the soil moderately moist during germination.
  • The seeds will germinate and sprout in one or two weeks, depending upon weather and soil warmth.
  • When the young plants are about 3 inches tall, thin them out leaving the strongest and best plants spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart.
  • Although Kale and Ornamental Cabbage seeds can be sown indoors at any time of the year, without cool temperatures the plants won t attain much colour.
  • For starting seeds indoors, I recommend that they be sown directly into a large 6-8 inch pot, to avoid the problems associated with transplanting.
  • Once the seeds of Ornamental Cabbage are sown, place the flat or pot in the refrigerator for 3 days to expedite germination.
  • Flowering Kale does not need this pre-chilling period.

Care:
  • Cut off flower stems as soon as they appear.
  • Pests and diseases are pretty much the same as those that affect edible kale and are treated accordingly.
